The more users interact with Google Play Music, the smarter the recommendation algorithm within the product gets. This is great for those advanced users who’ve been playing with the product for quite some time; however, not so much for those who are just starting out. Our goal for the Google Play Prism was to eliminate the cold start. It’s designed as an on-boarding tool for new customers purchasing an Android phone at retail. The idea is a new android customer quickly saves an entertainment taste profile for themselves, which is then saved via NFC tap to Google Play. By doing this we jumpstart the recommendation algorithm so when they start using the product, they quickly get served with more relevant content.
